This statement sets forth the views of the Association of Russian Speaking Intersex regarding the content of the proposed amendment to paragraph g. 1 of part 1 of article 72 of the Constitution of the Russian Federation on the protection of the socially significant institution of marriage. The Association of Russian Speaking Intersex recommends to intersex people and their allies abstain from voting for the proposed amendment; to the legislator – to adopt a new law on amending the Constitution without mentioning the sex characteristics of the participants of the marriage as a union based on love and mutual respect. Also, if the amendment is adopted, we recommend that the legislator introduce a quick, transparent, and accessible for intersex people procedure for changing the legal sex without establishing a psychiatric diagnosis.
